Professional Summary:
My laboratory studies the physiology, metabolism, genetics, and genomics of chlorophyll-based phototrophs. We employ DNA sequencing, RNAseq, genetic and biochemical methods in our work. Goals include the discovery of structural and functional relationships in the components of light-energy transduction as well as an understanding of the metabolic interactions that define phototroph community composition and structure. I have been a faculty member for the past 31 years, and have been actively involved in teaching, research and service during that time. I have published nearly 300 scientific papers during my career, and have trained a large number of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have quite successful academic careers of their own.
