Dr. Cathy Whitlock to Lecture at Museum of the Rockies on Jan. 15

Dr. Cathy Whitlock

Dr. Cathy Whitlock, Professor of Earth SciencesIoE Fellow, and Montana State University's newest Regents Professor, will give a talk titled "Looking backward, thinking forward: Perspectives of a paleoecologist" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15 at the Museum of the Rockies' Hager Auditorium.

From MSU News Service: "In her lecture, Whitlock will describe the approaches she and her team developed during the 1988 Yellowstone fires that are now used to inform resource management decisions and conservation efforts around the world and her team’s discoveries about the history of fire, people and climate in both hemispheres. She will also share her thoughts on the tough question of whether — given projected climate change — knowledge of the past is still relevant for understanding the future in places like Montana."

Whitlock served as the founding director of the Montana Institute on Ecosystems, was lead author of the 2017 Montana Climate Assessment, and served as lead investigator on the National Science Foundation Wildfire Partnership in Research and Education (WildFIRE PIRE) project. In addition to recently being named a Regents Professor at MSU, Whitlock was also elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in May 2018 and will be formally inducted into NAS at its annual meeting this spring.
