Maria is a PhD candidate in the department of Microbiology and Cell Biology. Her overarching goal is to address the ecotoxicological risks posed by drugs to aquatic fauna, with the aim of establishing regulations and safe thresholds to safeguard the environment from anthropogenic contaminants and reduce accidental human exposures. Her current doctoral research centers on examining the ecotoxicological impacts of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs entering the East Gallatin River.
Dr. Kiel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology. Her current research includes assessing prescription and illicit drug use in communities and monitoring the lifecycle of these drugs deposited as contaminants affecting nearby surface waters.
