Research related to environmental sciences: While on the ECE faculty at Utah State University (USU), I developed the optimal Disjoint Principal Component (DRC) method for unsupervised learning ("mining") of large sets of multi-featured of remotely sensed environmental data. Working with environmental engineering faculty at USU and scientists of the Norwegian Atmospheric Research Institute, the DRC method proved valuable in a number of (published) research projects such as watershed snowmelt runoff prediction, earth movement susceptibility, source allocation of organic air pollutants and monitoring and production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
