Climate in My Backyard summer camp session immerses kids grades 5–7 in climate and ecosystem science

Dan Vanderpool teaches students about pine beetles.

Whether you ski, float, farm or fish, the climate affects you and your ecosystem – from microbes to entire watersheds. That was the main message conveyed to participants in the June 2013 IoE session of Montana State University’s weeklong Peaks & Potentials camp for high ability kids entering grades 5, 6 and 7.

Dixon, Jean Louise

Assistant Professor
Earth Sciences
Montana State University

I am a geomorphologist interested in the chemical, physical and biological processes at Earth’s Surface that form soil from rock, transport soil and sediment, and sculpt the landsurface. My research uses geochemical tools such as cosmogenic radionuclides to quantify the rates and patterns of Earth surface processes.

Ewing, Stephanie

Assistant Professor
Land Resources & Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

My research explores the role of soils in the Earth system, with emphasis on biogeochemical cycles as revealed by variation of soil processes at the landscape scale, including atmospheric deposition to soils, disturbance gradients, and the contribution of weathering processes to groundwater and surface water chemistry in small catchments. My approach includes exploitation of novel isotopic tools to address interesting questions in these areas.

Gerlach, Robin

Associate Professor

Robin Gerlach is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in the College of Engineering at Montana State University-Bozeman (MSU).

Gobrogge, Christine

Assistant Research Professor
Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Environmental Analytical Lab

Hartshorn, Anthony

Assistant professor
Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
Montana State University

Tony is a soils scientist, trained at the University of California Davis. He studies soil processes, from the pit to landscape scale, and across agricultural, wildland, urban, and degraded contexts. Before arriving at MSU, he taught soils and general education science courses at James Madison University in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

McDermott, Tim

Professor, Soil & Environmental Microbiology
Land Resources & Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

Soil & environmental microbiology, focusing on: microbe-metalloid interactions involving arsenic, selenium, and antimony; microbial ecophysiology and population genetics in geothermal environments; Yellowstone Lake picoplankton structure and function. Techniques and methods used include fundamental molecular genetics, genomics and metagenomics, cultivation dependent and independent microbial ecology techniques.

Montagne, Cliff

Professor of Soils
Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

Professional interests in soil science(pedology or landscape emphasis), geomorphology, plant and animal ecology, land use, traditional ecological knowledge, native science, teaching and learning pedogogies, and holistic decision making. Certified Educator for Holistic Management International.

Education includes BS in Geology, Dartmouth College, MS in Earth Sciences and PhD in Soils at Montana State University.

Zabinski, Catherine

Associate Professor
Land Resources & Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

My work in belowground ecology takes place in the context of restoration, comparing disturbed, undisturbed and restored sites; in the context of natural extreme sites, particularly the thermal sites in Yellowstone National Park; and increasingly on questions related to sustainable agriculture. I am interested in mycorrhizal ecology, root system dynamics, plant-microbe interactions, and soil processes including decomposition and nutrient cycling.
