After working on international anticorruption issues for the U.S. government for a few years, I earned a Ph.D. in political science with specialties in public policy and comparative politics from Michigan State University. Subsequently I have held academic and research positions at North Dakota State University and Montana State University - Bozeman. My research has received support from the U.S. Department of Defense and the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

I teach courses in environmental sociology, the sociology of disasters, and rural sociology. My research has focused on environmental and rural issues in the American West including native plant policy versus practice, cyanide gold mining and community impacts, electric deregulation and regional impacts, non-timber forest product harvesting and socioeconomic change and well-being, and, most recently, transboundary community change in the Northern Rockies since 9/11.
