Landscape ecology

Allred, Brady

Assistant professor

University of Montana

I like to conduct research with the goal of improving conservation and land management. Interests include ecosystem change, processes, and structure at broad scales.

Beever, Erik

Research Ecologist
Dept. of Ecology
U.S. Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center

After completing my B.S. in Biological Sciences at U.C. Davis and my Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology at Univ. of NV, Reno under Drs. Joel Berger and Peter Brussard, I performed postdoctoral research under Dr. Dennis Murphy (in montane biodiversity) and Dr. David Pyke (in aridlands and rangeland ecologies).

Bendick, Rebecca

Associate Professor
Department of Geosciences
The University of Montana - Missoula

I am an associate professor of geophysics at the University of Montana. My primary research interests include continental deformation, tectonics, and the earthquake cycle. I am alos interested in landscape response to tectonic forcing, and landscape signals of deformation. Aside from research, I work hard to help convey and geologic hazard information to at-risk communities worldwide. I teach tectonics and geophysics content, as well as critical thinking, scientific literacy, and numeracy. I dabble in the ethics of scientific discoveries.

Crabtree, Bob

Chief Scientist
Ecosystems and Conservation Sciences
Yellowstone Ecological Research Center

Dr. Crabtree is the Founder and Chief Scientist of the Yellowstone Ecological Research Center (YERC) and has been conducting ecological research in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem for nearly 20 years. With a strong belief in collaborative research and education, he has crafted 47 MOUs, MOAs, and CRADAs with universities and federal agencies; served as PI on over 50 grant awards; and advised, co-advised, and supervised 41 graduate students and 3 post-docs working in the YERC lab in Bozeman.

Debinski, Diane

Professor, Department Head
Ecology
Montana State University

I conduct research in the fields of conservation biology, landscape ecology, and restoration ecology.  Some of the specific topics of my research include biodiversity preservation, effects of habitat fragmentation, and climate change.  In grasslands, my research has focused on evaluating the use of fire and grazing in the context of managing for plant, bird, and pollinator communities. In montane meadows I have been conducting both observational and experimental studies of community responses to drought and environmental variation.

Dixon, Jean Louise

Assistant Professor
Earth Sciences
Montana State University

I am a geomorphologist interested in the chemical, physical and biological processes at Earth’s Surface that form soil from rock, transport soil and sediment, and sculpt the landsurface. My research uses geochemical tools such as cosmogenic radionuclides to quantify the rates and patterns of Earth surface processes.

Florentine, Caitlyn

Lab Manager
Earth Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

I manage the MSU Paleoecology Lab, headed by Cathy Whitlock. The Paleoecology Lab group studies fire and vegetation history of the Quaternary Period via sediment core charcoal and pollen analysis. My undergraduate degree is from Colorado College in Geology and my M.S. is from MSU in Earth Sciences. My masters thesis project focused on rock glacier distribution, deformation mechanics, and rock glacier ice as a microbial habitat. I continue to be interested in cryospheric processes and alpine environments, particularly glacier mechanics and the role that debris plays in glacial systems.

I answer applied research questions at the intersection of wildlife biology, landscape ecology, and statistics. My work falls under three broad themes: (1) understand the influence of humans and associated land use impacts on wildlife distributions, densities, and related processes at local and landscape scales, (2) develop new analytical tools that address the influence of landscape features on animals at the sub-population and population scales, and (3) improve efficiency of research and monitoring through optimal study design.

I and my graduate students do research on large mammals, working on research questions that are of interest to state and federal wildlife management agencies.

Montagne, Cliff

Professor of Soils
Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

Professional interests in soil science(pedology or landscape emphasis), geomorphology, plant and animal ecology, land use, traditional ecological knowledge, native science, teaching and learning pedogogies, and holistic decision making. Certified Educator for Holistic Management International.

Education includes BS in Geology, Dartmouth College, MS in Earth Sciences and PhD in Soils at Montana State University.

Poole, Geoffrey

Assistant Professor of Fluvial Landscape Ecology
Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
Montana State University - Bozeman

I integrate concepts from the fields of hydrology, geomorphology, stream ecology, and landscape ecology to study river and floodplain ecosystems across spatial scales from stream reaches to river networks. My approach is primarily quantitative, integrating simulation modeling with spatial analysis.

Steven W. Running received a Ph.D. (1979) in Forest Ecology from Colorado State University. He has been with the University of Montana, Missoula since 1979, where he is a University Regents Professor of Ecology. His primary research interest is the development of global and regional ecosystem biogeochemical models integrating remote sensing with bioclimatology and terrestrial ecology.

VanWieren, Rebekah

Assistant Professor of Landscape Design
College of Agriculture, Plant Sciences & Plant Pathology
Montana State University

The primary focus of my research is on ecological landscape design in the context of community planning and site design. I am particularly interested in ecological design strategies for brownfield redevelopment and post-industrial landscapes, green infrastructure performance and services at community and regional scales, and landscape perception.

Watts, Jennifer

Assistant Professor
Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
Montana State University; Woods Hole Research Center

I study carbon cycle dynamics, surface hydrology, and changes in permafrost affected landscapes across Arctic-Boreal regions. My research interests include using satellite remote sensing data to inform terrestrial carbon (CO2, CH4) flux modeling, using information from eddy covariance to improve carbon emission models, and better understanding biogeophysical processes regulating greenhouse gas emissions in northern landscapes. When not in the office, I am usually somewhere in the mountains – backpacking, skiing, or mountain biking.
