My research and teaching focus on social-ecological systems and especially the interconnections between sustainable rural livelihoods and participatory conservation and development, in and beyond formally protected areas. The objectives of my research (conducted both in the U.S. intermountain west and overseas) are to provide relevant information and analyses to foster socially just and resilient resource management using participatory methods and collaborative conservation approaches.

My research focuses on processes for collaborating across organizational and disciplinary lines to do innovative work--so that we can collaborate successfully, reliably, and on purpose. I use qualitative data and methods as well as simulations, and my findings culminate, ideally, in practical guidance grounded in rich social theories.

I am a human-environment geographer with three streams of research interests: 1) using a political ecology approach to investigate the social, political, and economic drivers of water management and environmental change 2) assessing climate change vulnerability, identifying equitable adaptation options, and fostering adaptive capacity, and 3) using a science and technology studies (STS) approach to understand technological change and risk in socioecological systems.
