Virtual Observatory and Ecological Informatics System (VOEIS)

Timeframe:
2009 to 2012

The Virtual Observatory and Ecological Informatics System (VOEIS, pronounced like VOICE) is a collaborative project between Montana and Kentucky, funded by a National Science Foundation EPSCoR Track-2 award.  Track-2 awards facilitate the enhancement of discovery, learning, and economic development of EPSCoR jurisdictions through the use of cyberinfrastructure and other technologies.  The PI for VOEIS is Dr. Ric Hauer, The University of Montana, and the MSU PI is Dr. Clem Izurieta, Montana State University (previously Dr. Gwen Jacobs, Montana State University)

VOEIS provides a framework for data acquisition, analysis, model integration, and display of data products from completed workflows including geospatially explicit models, graphs from statistical analyses, GIS displays of classified ecological attributes on the landscape, and 3-D visualization models of waterscape and landscape processes.

Future Montana Institute on Ecosystems cyberinfrastructure efforts will build upon VOEIS to develop statewide and regional capacity to acquire, manage, visualize, and analyze large, open-access environmental  datasets.
