Research/Scholarly Work:
I study whether the nutritional quality of pine trees influences their likelihood of attack by the mountain pine beetle, a native forest insect. I measure nitrogen, phosphorus, carbohydrates (sugars and starch) and lipids in different tree tissues, and see if these nutrients change following beetle attack. In particular, I am interested in whether whitebark pine, an important high elevation tree, is of higher nutritional quality than lower elevation pines, and whether the mountain pine beetle may therefore prefer this threatened tree species.
