The goals of my dissertation research are to gain insight into the origin and evolution of biological nitrogen fixation to better understand the environmental conditions that resulted in the selective pressure to evolve the nitrogenase enzyme and the type of organisms that the nitrogenase enzyme first emerged in as well as to elucidate which form of the enzyme is most deeply-rooted among extant organisms.
