Speaker Name:
Andrew Friend
University of Cambridge
Department of Geography

Andrew Friend is Reader in Earth Systems Science at Cambridge University in the Department of Geography (http://www.geog.cam.ac.uk/people/friend/). His research specializes in modeling vegetation growth and dynamics. He developed the HYBRID dynamic global vegetation model in 1997, which was among the first ecosystem models to combine forest gap dynamics with detailed ecophysiological processes. Prior to Cambridge, Andrew has held positions at University of Virginia, the Edinburgh Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, NASA GISS, and LSCE. From 2004 to 2013, he was coordinator of two European Union Research Training Networks, "GREENCYCLES I and II", which trained PhD and Post-Doctoral Scientists in earth system science disciplines involving more than 14 institutions. His presentation will cover topics related to European inter-institutional approaches to global change science and education, as well as introduce results from an inter-sectoral climate impacts assessment, ISI-MIP.
