Dr. William Ruddiman is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia in the Department of Environmental Sciences.  He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1969 in Marine Geology, and has gone on to be an oceanographer at the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, a senior researcher at the Lamont-Doherty Observatory, the director of the CLIMAP project, the chair on the Panel on Revised Climate Position Statement at the Geological Society of America, and more, including his professorship at UVA.  

Dr. Ruddiman's accomplishments are many and include the 2010 Lyell Medal from the Geological Society of London, the 2012 Distinguished Career Award from the American Quaternary Association, and the 2013 Royal Scottish Geographical Society Coppock Research Medal.  He is the author of over 150 papers, the editor or co-editor of three books and four ocean drilling volumes, an undergraduate climate textbook, and more.  

He is most well known for his "early anthropocene" hypothesis, and also has created dialogue and controversy with the idea that that Tibetan tectonic uplift caused a reduction in atmospheric CO2 that led to the earth's most recent cooling trends.
