The Montana Institute on Ecosystems will focus on interdisciplilnary environmental and ecosystem science research themes, including the following projects:

  • Montana EPSCoR:  Environmental and Ecosystem Science
    • MtEPSCoR program is committed to addressing one of the critical scientific and social issues facing the nation: the effects of climate change in sustaining healthy ecosystems and economic growth. By bridging the worlds of microbiology, ecology, and climatology, the MtEPSCoR program seeks to understand the dynamics and linkages of ecosystem processes that govern how an ecosystem responds to climate change.

  • Virtual Observatory and Ecological Informatics System (VOEIS)
    • VOEIS is a collaborative project between the EPSCoR jurisdictions of Montana and Kentucky with partners from industry and the public sector and is funded by the National Science Foundation. We are developing an integrated sensor and ecological informatics system through the use of research-based lines of inquiry and an informatics framework that manages workflow from streaming sensor data to the application of those data in simulation models and visualizations.  Ric Hauer, PI
  • WildFIRE PIRE (NSF Parnterships in International Research and Education)
    • A team of International researchers, educators, and science communicators are working to advance global understanding of wildfire, climate, and people.  Cathy Whitlock, PI
