MSU Undergraduate Intern Rolls With Changes

My name is Hailey Gelzer, and I am one of the research interns this summer! Summer is flying by, but my research has already given me a vast amount of experiences and challenges. I began the summer with the intentions of working with a respirometer, to determine the respiration rates of aquatic insects. With the help of this machine I was going to see how metabolic rates differed in these insects at different temperatures. Although, weeks into my research, I came to discover that the respirometer sensor I acquired was in fact too old. It was old to the point that it no longer functioned properly. After much discussion, I decided to pursue a new project. This project will be looking into how different stream variables affect temperature, as we have temperature loggers all over Gallatin County. I have been having fun in the field, hunting for these loggers we placed in December, while also learning how to take different stream measurements. My field work is completed and I am on my way to analyzing the data.  Sometimes things just don’t go as planned and this summer I have had to adapt with that reality.
