New Faculty Hire: Craig Carr

Craig Carr

Craig Carr is an assistant professor in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University. An applied ecologist, Carr works in arid and semi-arid rangeland ecosystems focusing on the interactions among plants, soils, and animals and the way these interactions are influenced by resource management and disturbance. This research can provide ecologically based information to land managers that will aid in developing management approaches for long-term sustainable use of rangelands.

Carr received his bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Alberta and attended Oregon State University where he completed his M.S. and PhD. Originally from Canada, Carr worked for eight years with the British Columbia Ministry of Forests in the Kamloops Forest Region as an agrologist prior to returning to graduate school. In addition, he was the Executive Director of the Crooked River Watershed Council. Most recently, Craig was a research assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Reno.

At MSU, Carr’s time is split between research and teaching such courses as Range and Pasture Monitoring, Biomes of Western Wildlands, Vegetation of Western Wildlands, and Rangeland Ecological Theory and Application.

His current research projects include: Evaluating opportunities for sheep grazing in cropping systems, understanding ecological consequences of bladed fire lines used in fire suppression activities, evaluating the direct effects of livestock grazing on sagegrouse nesting success, and developing an improved understanding of the patterns and mechanisms of cheatgrass invasion in the Northern Great Plains.
