Peters, John

Professor
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Montana State University
Professional Summary:

My laboratory studies various fundamental aspects of nitrogen fixation, hydrogen metabolism, carbon dioxide fixation, and photosynthesis. We are actively engaged in studies that involve genome sequencing, examining patterns of gene expression, various physiological and biochemical studies, as well as microbial ecology to further understand the mechanisms and the environmental underpinnings that drive the occurrence, diversity, and phylogenetic relatedness of biochemical components of these complex processes. I have been a faculty for 17 years and have spent the last 11 years as a faculty at MSU having a primary appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and an affiliate appointment in the Department of Microbiology. I have been actively involved in teaching, the majority of which has been lower level service teaching in organic and biochemistry as well as have been responsibility for spearheading a large number of outreach activities associated with Astrobiology and the Thermal Biology Institute and held a leadership role in the Thermal Biology Institute for eight years. I have published over 100 papers in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Microbial Ecology first tier journals with publications in Science and Nature. I have placed a number of students at the undergraduate, graduate , postdoctoral students in top academic institutions with several receiving highly competitive fellowships from NSF, NASA, and private sources.
