Professional Summary:

My research focuses on the chemical interactions that underlie trophic interactions with particular focus on plant-herbivore interactions and indirect defenses. Currently, I am investigating the use of perennial grass species as alternative hosts and pest management strategy for the wheat pest Cephus cintus. In addition to managing perennial grasses as a pest management tool, I am investigating how to manage the same grass stands to promote pollinator diversity through the addition of native floral resources. By examining these processes at a landscape scale, these results will have important contributions to large scale wheat production and biodiversity conservation.

In addition to research, I am interested in connecting my research with classroom lessons and independent projects to make science more engaging and accessible for students of all ages. For example, I have developed inquiry-based science lessons for elementary school classes; led ecological field courses for public schools, college courses, and adults; and used service-learning pedagogy to organize numerous restoration projects, teach college courses, and train community groups. Recently, I have partnered with the Montana Department of Agriculture and Montana 4H to develop resources to improve agriculture literacy in public school education.
