MSU IoE Graduate Enhancement Funding, 2017

Montana Institute on Ecosystems Graduate Enhancement Funding, 2017 Deadline: Friday, March 31, 2017

The Montana Institute on Ecosystems (IoE) at MSU has set aside funds to support graduate students in environmental sciences or related fields who need specific assistance for summer research, travel, publication support, etc. or who would like to convene a meeting, conference, or special project. Awards up to $1000 per student are available to help accomplish an activity tied directly to their educational objectives.


  • Open to MSU-Bozeman, MSU-Billings, MSU-Northern, Great Falls College-MSU, Carroll College, and Tribal College graduate students who will not graduate before December 2017
  • Must be pursuing a degree in environmental or social sciences or a related field
  • Major advisor must be affiliated with the IoE
  • Funds will be managed by the IoE; reimbursements will be made in up to three increments
  • Purchases MUST be pre-approved by the IoE 
  • Award cannot be used to support international travel, research or meeting costs
  • Students will be notified of support by mid-April; funds must be used by August 31, 2017


Interested students should submit the following:

(1) A letter describing your research topic and the funding need/activity. The letter should explain:

  • The significance of the activity in relation to your graduate program
  • The relationship your work has to the IoE’s goals
  • The full project costs and the amount requested of the IoE
  • When and how funds will be used (a spreadsheet budget)
  • Acknowledgement that there will be a brief report on the outcome (once funds are expended)
  • Recipients will also be asked to complete an IoE database entry regarding their funding/outcome. IoE staff will assist with this when the time comes 
  • Include applicant’s name and contact information, degree, expected graduation date, and advisor’s name and contact information with the letter

(2) Your curriculum vitae

·  Potential impact on the quality of applicant’s dissertation research and/or potential for applicant’s professional development

·  Are resources available elsewhere to accomplish this?
